Apple Pie Dog Food Treat

Apple Pie Dog Food Treat

With the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and fall season, we were on the hunt for a fancy apple pie recipe just for our pups. The following recipe is adapted from Gone to the Snow Dogs’ DIY Apple Pie for Dogs recipe. It has minimal ingredients, no sugar added, and is bound to make your pup feel grateful to be part of the family.

You could either make these pies in small pie pans and cut slices for your pups, or try using tiny tins, about 2-3” to make individual pies! Hint: cupcake pans work nicely for the size but need to be well-greased to make sure your pies pop right out.

Supplies & Ingredients:

Baking

  • Pie tins or cupcake/muffin pan
  • Rolling pin
  • Extra flour to coat rolling pin
  • Dough knife
  • Small bowl
  • Whisk

Crust

  • ½ cup coconut oil (melted)
  • 1 cup canned coconut milk (unsweetened)
  • 2 ¾ cups wheat flour

Pie Filling:

  • 3 cups of peeled and sliced up apples (make sure to remove all stems and seeds)
  • 2/3 cup of apple juice (plain, unsweetened)
  • 1 tbs of cornstarch
  • ½ tbs of ground cinnamon

For the pie crust, mix all pie crust ingredients together until you have a good dough that is not too sticky. If it’s too sticky, add a tbs more flour until you get the right consistency. Roll out your dough with your rolling pin to about ¼” and then cut to fit into your tins. Remember, you want the dough to go up the sides of your pie tin to create a nice bowl for the filling. Use your thumb to press the dough up the sides of your tin and to smooth. Save leftover dough for decoration on the top!

Then put together your filling by putting the apples and 2 tbs of apple juice in a saucepan and cooking at a low heat until softened. Take the cornstarch, cinnamon, and leftover apple juice and whisk together in a small bowl until well combined, then pour into your softened apples and let cook another 10 minutes to thicken. Allow to cool, then put small scoops into your pie crusts. You may choose to simply have open-face pies, or you can cut the leftover dough and make a lattice pattern on top of the pie.

Bake your pies at 350 degrees for 25-45 minutes (start on the low end with small pies to make sure they don’t burn!). You want the tops to turn slightly brown.

Allow to cool before serving these up to your pup! A small squirt of whipped cream is a great way to top off your beautiful apple pup pies.
